    Waterbury, Conn. - In a desperate effort to save his doe and fawn, a handsome buck deer charged full tilt the other day against an onrushing locomotive as it swept around a curve on the Naupatuck division near Campville. The doe and fawn were saved, but the gallant buck was instantly killed.

    CORONA, Calif. (AP) — Gene Maxwell’s light plane is a wreck. It seems that a train hit it.

    The Palladium says that about 7 1/ 2 o'clock last night, the evening train from New London ran over a cow, three miles this side of Branford, and the baggage, mail and first passenger cars were thrown from the track.

    1907  Pope Manufacturing failure
    Receivers for the Pope Manufacturing company and its subsidiary company, the Pope Motor Car company, which are engaged in the manufacture of automobiles and bicycles, with main offices and plant at Hartford, Conn., were appointed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The failure was ascribed to the stringency of the money market.

    Distrust of the government's attitude toward the corporations, a threatened monetary stringency in all the leading markets of the world and the financial embarrassment of the Pope Manufacturing company combined to demoralize the stock market in New York. Prices melted in sensational fashion ad the average level of declines was below that reached in the memorable Norther Pacific panic of May, 1901. Stocks were sold lower than ever before in their history.

    Seventeen summer hotels, 16 summer cottages and a score of buildings occupied by stores were burned in a fire which swept the eastern section of Old Orchard, Me., causing a loss estimated at half a million dollars.     Miss Elizabeth Gallighan, of St. Louis, leaned too near a fast revolving fly wheel in the shoe factory in which she is employed and her entire scalp was torn from her head. The scalp was removed from the fly wheel intact and surgeons performed a rare operation by sewing it back in place.

    In an address at the chautauqua at Aurora, Ill., Senator DuBois, of Idaho, urged his hearers to use their influence with the Illinois representatives in congress to secure and amendment of the constitution under which the federal government will have power to deal with unlawful cohabitation and polygamy and thus check the spreading of political power of the Mormon church.

    St. Petersburg, Fla., (AP) – Mack HOPEEN, 37, a construction worker, rolled off a divan where he was sleeping, struck his neck on the ragged edge of a coffee can used as an ash tray and bled to death. He severed the jugular vein in his neck and died 35 minutes later.
