    1880 - Sad Accident.


    A little child four years of age, of Mr. Webster of Canaan, was fatally scalded last Friday, by falling into a pail of boiling water, which its mother had prepared for washing the floor. The family had but just that day moved into their new home.

    The same day a Mrs. Shackford, a lady about sixty years of age, through a misstep, fell the entire length of the cellar stairs, breaking several ribs, and otherwise seriously injuring her—though not fatally.

    Redding, Conn., April 22. - Samuel Langhorn Clemens, (Mark Twain), died painlessly at 6:30 o'clock last night of angina pectoris. He lapsed into a coma at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon and never recovered consciousness. It was the end of a man out-worn by grief and acute agony of body.

    Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin was disturbed that an issue as important as our environment was not addressed in politics or by the media, so he created the first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970. An estimated 20 million people nationwide attended festivities that day. It was a truly astonishing grassroots explosion, leading eventually to national legislation such as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act.
