    1890 - MURDERER AND SUICIDE. Abel Bergerson Poisons His Two Children and Himself.


    New has been received of the suicide at Spragueville, N.Y., of Abel Bergerson, who first poisoned his two young children with rat poison and then took the stuff himself.

    Bergerson belonged to Eboulements, in the Province of Quebec, Canada and was accompanied to the United States by a French Canadian girl known in Eboulements as Lucie. It was her desertion that apparently induced the commission of the crime, for he left a letter, in which he said:

    Chiefland, Fla. (UP) - An Air Force jet fighter crashed and exploded in a watermelon patch here Tuesday night, apparently taking its young pilot to his death.

    Officials at MacDill Air Force Base identified the pilot at 1st Lt. ROBERT E. CRENSHAW, 24, of North Miami Beach. CRENSHAW was officially listed as "missing and presumably lost."

    1906  Ascutneyville Farmer Fatally Hurt.
    A shocking accident occurred in Ascutneyville May 9, where by Henry Cady lost his life. Mr. Cady went to the barn to do his evening chores and fell through a floor about nine feet, striking on his head, a gash being cut and the man being so badly injured internally that he died Saturday night, May 12.     A terrific waterspout struck the southern suburbs of Covington, Ky., and passed up the Miami valley with damages reported from as far as Dayton. Near Covington the water rolled down the hills in a wave 20 feet deep and 100 yards wide. The residence of Edward Wohrley was carried four blocks and dashed to pieces. The house was occupied by four families. All escaped except Mrs. Flachner and Willie Willen, aged four who were drowned.

    1858  FIRE IN CUMMINGTON.
    The house of Mr. Jesse Reed on Cummington Hill was burned to the ground on Tuesday morning. The fire was discovered at about three o'clock breaking out near the chimney, from which it is supposed to have caught. The house was a fine one, built of stone, and just refitted throughout, preparatory to the approaching marriage of a son of Mr. Reed. Loss $15,000, insured for $600, at the Hampden office in Springfield.

    1908  COLLEGE GIRL KILLED WHEN HORSES RAN AWAY
    Northampton, Mass., May 20. - Miss Ethel Borroughs, of Somerville, a senior, at Smith college was killed by being thrown from a carriage in which she was riding with a classmate, Miss Mary Doris, also of Somerville, and other friends in the neighboring town of Goshen. The span of horses started to run away, the girls became frightened and in attempting to get out of the carriage Miss Burroughs was thrown. She struck on her head, breaking her neck.

    SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 20 - The Edwards Church and the Hunt Building, at Northampton, were totally destroyed by fire last night. The loss is about $50,000, of which $20,000 falls upon the Church; $8,500 upon BENJAMI NORTH'S heirs, owners of the HUNT BUILDING; $15,000 upon R. J. FAIR, whose dry-goods and fancy store was in the building, and $5,000 upon EVERETT & HANMAN, jobbers, in the upper-story of the same.
