    A Spanish girl, having ridden her mule a day's journey with a grape cane for a switch, took a fancy on her arrival home to stick it into the ground to see if it would grow.     About 1 o'clock yesterday morning an attempt was made to burn the mansion of George C. Bolton, in Woonsocket, R. I. A wood-box saturated with kerosene-oil was set on fire, but the smoke awakened a servant girl and the fire was extinguished.      Women in New France worked very hard. They had to take care of the house, cook for the family, take care of the younger children. Sometimes women had 15 children or more. Women made clothes for the family using cloth that she spun.
