    Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 20. - At least three persons were killed, a dozen injured, and $200,000 property damage was caused yesterday by a fire that raged through the five story Cable Piano Company building in the heart of Atlanta's downtown business section.

    Flames swept quickly up through an elevator shaft to all floors of the structure following an explosion of undetermined origin in the basement. Firemen finally brought them under control after a terrific struggle.

    Johnson, Paige, and Pierce Secure Three Large Bucks in Bloomfield. Dr. H. H. Johnson, of North Main St., Dr. S. W. Paige, of Bank st., and Dr. H. L. Pierce, of Swanton, returned home this afternoon from a few days' hunting trip to Bloomfield. They secured three bucks averaging 200 pounds each. The party made the trip by motor.

    1820  November 20 – After the sinking of the American whaleship Essex of Nantucket by a sperm whale in the southern Pacific Ocean the survivors are left afloat in three small whaleboats.
    They eventually resort, by common consent, to cannibalism to allow some to survive.

    1869  At Albany, N. Y., on the 15th, in the Shaker habeas corpus case of Sarah Ann Barbour,
    against the New Lebanon Shakers, for alleged illegal restricting of her child, the court rendered a decision awarding the child to the custody of its mother and deciding that the Shakers illegally held her and restrained her. The right of appeal to the next general term was granted to defendants.

    1869  In the towns of Cumberland, Smithfield, Blackstone, and Bellingham, R. I.,
    there are seventeen cotton and eight woolen mills, which employ 5,550 hands, run 4,480 looms, and annually use 15,300,000 pounds of cotton. Foundations are now being laid to run 150,000 spindles.

    Syracuse, N. Y., Nov. 19. - At 5 o'clock this morning flames were discovered issuing from the upper story of the old library building at Hobart College, Geneva. The building is between the two dormitories, and there was a wild scene as the students and Professors, almost panic stricken, rushed from their rooms. The college bell was on the roof of the library, and a student had to run to the engine houses, a mile away, to give the alarm. The flames spread rapidly, and when the fire companies...

    1923  Garrett Morgan of Cleveland invented the first three-position traffic light.
    November 20, 1923: On this day in 1923, the U.S. Patent Office grants Patent No. 1,475,074 to 46-year-old inventor and newspaperman Garrett Morgan for his three-position traffic signal.
