    GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass., Sept. 5 - The most peculiar case of violent death which has occurred in Great Barrington in years was discovered yesterday when Charles Kellogg found lying at the rear entrance to T. R. Prindle's residence on Mahwaie street, the body of Seigfred Alder, 45, with a rifle bullet wound in his right breast.     1945 - 4 Dead, Scores Hurt in Wreck


    ARCADIA, Sept. 5 - Failure of the engineer on the California limited's lead locomotive to obey speed orders was blamed today by Santa Fe officials for a wreck that killed four persons and injured scores in a derailment last night near the Santa Anita race track.

    The death list was expected to increase since many persons were seriously hurt.

    1921  BIG FIRE AT WENTWORTH, N. H.
    Wentworth, N. H., Sept. 6. -- Two stores and seven houses in the center of town were destroyed by a fire which started here early today. The fire threatened to spread to other buildings and help was summond from nearby towns. No one was reported injured. The cause of the fire, which started in the general store of H. R. PERO, has not been determined.

    1865  Train Wreck
    A collision occurred on the Long Island Railroad, near Jamaica, between the two engines, General Grant and General Sherman, attached to their respective trains. The trains were badly wrecked, the engines capsized, and four or five persons killed and large numbers injured.

    The Grand Central Hotel in Omaha, the finest hotel between Chicago and San Francisco, was totally destroyed by fire on the 4th inst. Three persons were killed and eight seriously injured. The insurance will almost cover the loss.

    A resident of Thompson, Connecticut, publishes a cure for the "opium habit" that seems very simple. It is done by tapering off - diminishing the dose every day, which can be done without suffering, until the desire for the narcotic is removed and the ill effects dissipated.

    1900  $50,000 Fire In Connecticut.
    DANIELSON, Conn., Sept. 5.--A fire started in a barn in the rear of The Observer office, Railroad Square, Dayville, to-day, and destroyed The Observer building , the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company's freight house, four tenement dwellings, besides considerably damaging the Dayville Hotel and other buildings. The total loss is more than $50,000.
