    1910 - Father and Child Nearly Drowned.


    Herbert Hedrick, of Burlington, and Allee, his 3 year old daughter, were rescued from the icy waters of the Delaware river on Monday night. The baby was saved by Stanley Page, of Burlington, and Hedrick was pulled out through the combined efforts of four men, who formed a life line.

    1784 - January 14 - The Continental Congress Ratified the Treaty of Paris Ending the Revolutionary War


    On September 3, 1783, more than a year after the last shots were fired, a peace treaty was drawn up in Paris. Under the terms of the treaty, the United States was granted territory as far west as the Mississippi River.

    The town of Milton, Mass., with a population of less than 3,000, has voted $5,000 to establish a public library, and an equal amount has been raised by subscription.

    1871  Sticky Situation
    During the services of a prayer meeting at Fall River, Massachusetts, a messenger came to summon an M. D., who was present, to attend a little boy who appeared to be suddenly attacked, after a short nap, with symptoms of paralysis, to the great consternation of his parents, as one hand was placed against his head, and he said he could not remove it. The doctor hastened to his relief, and, upon examination, it was found that the hand was firmly fastened with chewing gum.

    1871  Snapped Like Threads
    The Bangor (Me.) Whig reports that, owing to the intense cold, the wires of the Western Union Telegraph line, between that city and Lewiston, were recently broken in nearly fifty places. The wires were put up during the hot weather, last summer, and contracting with the cold, snapped like threads.

    Mayor Wilson, of Corry, Pa, went deer hunting and at the first shot brought down a $200 colt. He paid the owner and owns the carcass. It is dear meat to him, but it is not venison.

    1859  BURNING OF THE TROY HOSPITAL.
    TROY, N. Y., Thursday, Jan. 13. About 6 o'clock this evening a fire broke out in the Troy Hospital, which, owing the scarcity of water, was partially consumed. The patients were all rescued in safety. The loss is about $3,000; but is all covered by insurance.

    1859  DESTRUCTIVE FIRE IN CORNING, N. Y.
    CORNING, Thursday, Jan. 13. The large stone building, owned by R. E. Robinson & Co., and occupied by several persons as a flouring mill, furniture wareroom, confectionary and bakery, &c., was totally destroyed by fire at about 2 o'clock this morning. Loss $30,000; insurance $14,000. Supposed to be the work of an incendiary.
