    1887 - A TERRIFIC EXPLOSION. NITRO-GLYCERINE QUICKLY DEMOLISHES A POWDER FACTORY.


    PLATTSBURG, N. Y., Jan. 11. - The people of this village were startled at 8:45 o'clock this morning by a terrific report followed by long-continued rumbling and the smashing of windows. Fully 1,200 pounds of nitro-glycerine were exploded at the Clinton Powder Company's factory, a mile and a half from this place.     1920 - BIG AUDITORIUM IN LOS ANGELES BURNED DOWN.


    Los Angeles, Jan. 12. - Shrine auditorium, the largest hall here, was completely destroyed by fire yesterday.

    Six firemen, one policeman and one civilian were more or less seriously injured. OTTO SUEDKE, fire lieutenant, suffered a broken skull.

    The origin of the fire is unknown, but early today both police and fire officials said they did not believe it was incendiary. One theory is that a defective gas heater was responsible. The loss is variously estimated at from $200,000 to $500,000. ... Read MORE...

    1889  FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE.
    ...A land-slide occurred near Berthier-en-Haut, Que., on the 7th, and what was a high bank along the river disappeared, leaving in its place an enormous cavity some five or six acres in extent. Several cows and horses were killed and many barns were smashed to pieces.

    (By Associated Press.) Rochester, N. Y., Jan. 12. - Two freight trains were wrecked on the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad, near Warsaw, early today, in a head on collision. Conductor JOHN F. O'BRIEN, of Rochester, who was riding in an engine, was killed.

    1894  A FATAL EXPLOSION - Four Men Killed and Three Buildings Blown to Pieces.
    An explosion that shook nearly every house in Kingston N. Y., and in all directions within a radius of ten miles from Rifton occurred at 7.55 o'clock, a. m. The explosion occurred in the works of the Laflin-Rand Powder Mills, in the building known as the drying rooms, where 650 kegs of powder exploded.
