    The deadliest fire in Milwaukee history occurred at the Newhall House hotel on January 10, 1883 on the corner of Michigan Street and Broadway. Firemen who battled previous fires at the hotel, one of Wisconsin’s largest, dubbed it a “tinder-box.” The inferno originated in the opulent structure’s wooden elevator shaft and took over twenty-six hours to extinguish.     SUNBURY, Pa., January 9 - At 5:30 o'clock this evening, a rain and windstorm came up suddenly and blew over several of the stacks of the Sunbury saw mill. The mill is situated between the Reading and Pennsylvania railroads on the outskirts of the city. First, is a puddling mill having six furnaces.     The collapse of Pemberton Mill has been deemed the worst industrial accident in Massachusetts history and one of the worst industrial disasters in American history. On January 10, 1860, the large factory in Lawrence collapsed without warning. An estimated 145 workers were killed and 166 injured.     1896  ODDFELLOWS' TEMPLE DESTROYED BY FIRE.
    South Bend, Ind., Jan. 10. - Fire Wednesday night destroyed the Oddfellows temple and contents, causing a loss of $35,000. Other losses were as follows: John E. Fisher, law and real estate office. Jasper E. Lewis, insurance. A. L. BRICK, law office. WILBERT WARD, law offices. J. C. STOVER, lumber office. F. J. LEWIS MYER, law office. Dunbar & Dunbar, law and real estate office. The heaviest losers are Kempner & Schafer and the Oddfellows, who own the building.

    1896  HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING BURNED.
    Michigan City, Ind., Jan. 10. - The city high school building was burned to the ground yesterday evening, fire being discovered a few minutes after school was dismissed. It gained so much headway before the department arrived that with all its exertions it could not be subdued. The fire caught near a hot air shaft. Loss, $50,000; insured for $30,000. A valuable library and laboratory were destroyed. All the books of the scholars in the 12 rooms are lost.
