    Barre, March 10. - A mass meeting of the granite quarrymen was held in the town hall of Barre town, Saturday evening for the purpose of organizing a quarrymen's union, the object being to demand a day of eight hours with nine hours' pay.

    The officers elected were, president, G. M. McLeod; vice-president, Albert Davis; financial secretary, Norman G. McDonald; recording secretary, Andrew J. Welch; treasurer, Joseph Clark.

    Niagara Falls, March 12. - An icicle that became detached from the high bank below the railway bridge at the Whirlpool Rapids this afternoon caused the death of JOSEPH MENZER, a conductor on a belt line car, injured Motorman HYATT, wreck the electric car, and injured these passengers: S.     CALAIS, Me., March 12. - This morning a fire broke out in the furniture store of Gillis & Gallagher. The stock and fixtures were entirely consumed. The loss is $5,000: insurance $2,000. The books and papers were saved. The building is owned by S. P. Poole, who loses $1.400. He has no insurance. The flames extended to two adjoining buildings, which were damaged to the amount of $2,000; insurance, $1,000.

    Revere, Mass., March 12. - Fire was discovered in two of the unoccupied two-story frame houses in the pier district, Beachmont, early Saturday morning. Although the department responded promptly, they succeeded in saving only adjoining property. The two houses were burned. The loss is estimated at about $1,500, partially insured.
