Tensions between the American colonists and the British were already running high in the early spring of 1770. Late in the afternoon, on March 5, a crowd of jeering Bostonians slinging snowballs gathered around a small group of British soldiers guarding the Boston Customs House. The soldiers became enraged after one of them had been hit, and they fired into the crowd, even though they were under orders not to fire. Five colonists were shot and killed.

Reno, Nev. - A fire broke out at Reno last Sunday morning, and in three hours all the business part of the town was in ashes, the only houses escaping being the Masonic building with Hagerman & Schooling's grocery store on the first floor, and John Larcombes.
Two or three Central Pacific trains, including the lightning train, were destroyed.
The loss is estimated at $1,000,000 with about $150,000 insurance.
Five persons lost their lives:

Reno, Nev. - A fire broke out at Reno last Sunday morning, and in three hours all the business part of the town was in ashes, the only houses escaping being the Masonic building with Hagerman & Schooling's grocery store on the first floor, and John Larcombes.

A vicious but fast horse, driven before a "sulky" while proceeding at a rapid rate down Main street, kicked up, and got his two hind legs over the whiflletree, from which position the animal could not withdraw them. Nevertheless, he paddled along on two legs and made good time, to the wonder and astonishment of the lookers-on.
