    March 6 - Charles King of Detroit is the first person to test drive a gasoline-powered automobile in Michigan.

    There is a great to-do in Detroit today. The city that the auto built, is celebrating the Golden Jubilee of the beginning of the Auto Age. For it was early in 1896 that Charles King put-putted a small gasoline-engined buggy along Detroit streets.     1958 - FEAR 18 MAY BE DEAD; COFFER DAM COLLAPSE. MEN TRAPPED WHEN WALL HIT BY ICE.


    Montreal (CP) - Reports conflicted today as to the number of construction workers who died Wednesday night when a coffer dam collapsed at the Riviere des Prairies. Police in Laval des Rapides said they believed 18 men were killed, but an official of a construction firm set the toll at about 11.

    Toledo, O., March 5. - During the prevalence of a heavy storm of wind and rain, at an early hour this morning, a chimney of the Buckeye Brewery was blown down, falling on and crushing the engine house, in which Policeman JOHN HASSETT and M. T. DOYLE and the night watchman at the brewery had taken refuge. The former were killed and the latter seriously injured. The wind attained a velocity of 72 miles per hour, doing considerable damage.

    1914  Broke Through Gates - Auto Smashed Protection at Essex Road Crossing.
    Old Saybrook, March 6. An automobile from Essex road, owner not known, as Gateman M. J. Mooney could not get the number because it was covered with slush, went right through the gates at the crossing without stopping as the 8:15 a. m. train was coming in from New London. The arm broke off in the body where the lift is manipulated and landed some distance on the track without injuring anyone.
